Today, we announced that 2U has acquired edX to create one of the world’s most comprehensive free-to-degree online learning platforms, reaching over 40 million learners globally. As we shared at the deal sign in June, the proceeds of the transaction will directly fund the nonprofit that will continue under the leadership of edX founders Harvard and MIT. The nonprofit plans to support innovation in lifelong learning and advance next generation learning experience platforms, including, but not limited to, Open edX.

With respect to the Open edX platform, the nonprofit will launch a new Technology Oversight Committee (TOC) that will be responsible for guiding the technical direction and vision of the open source platform and community. The TOC will include representatives from the nonprofit and edX/2U as well as the broader Open edX community and will support the nonprofit’s ongoing work to develop robust community involvement while serving community interests that align with the nonprofit’s ongoing mission objectives. The non-profit investments in technology will support strategies that advance high impact learning experiences together with affordable and accessible offerings.

This marks an exciting moment in time for the Open edX community. We’ve already seen the immense impact of the entire network over the past eight years, and it will continue with this next step. edX and 2U look forward to continuing to work closely with the Open edX community:

  • 2U expects to be a significant contributor of code to the Open edX platform, and expects to increase the impact that Open edX can have in supporting learning outcomes around the world.
  • Anant Agarwal, who as founder and CEO, directed edX’s and Open edX’s evolution into one of the world’s leading online learning platforms, will join 2U as Chief Open Education Officer. He will also serve as one of the representatives on Open edX’s new TOC.

The Open edX community – including those in the marketplace, core committers program, and the preferred provider program – should expect to continue collaborating with the nonprofit, which will be sharing more information regarding next steps and plans in the coming months.

We are excited to share more updates with the community, as information becomes available. For now, please join us in celebrating this exciting new phase for Open edX. Together, we can go confidently forward on our path to truly transform and reimagine education for the better.
